MILWAUKEE (AP) -Marquette picked assistant coach Brent ``Buzz'' Williams on Monday to replace Tom Crean, who left last week to become coach at Indiana.
Assistant athletic director Scott Kuykendall said the university scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to introduce Williams as the new head coach.
Williams led Marquette's recruiting efforts as an assistant to Crean last season.
He joined Crean's staff last July after one year as head coach at the University of New Orleans.
Before that, Williams was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons at Texas A&M under coach Billy Gillispie.
Boston Celtics coach and former Marquette star Doc Rivers said late last week that Williams would be a ``terrific'' replacement for Crean, who led the program for the past nine years.
Williams' talent as a recruiter and his connection with the program have been seen as strengths that could calm some of the incoming recruits who might be wavering on their commitment to Marquette with Crean's departure.
Guards Dominic James and Jerel McNeal are considering entering the NBA draft, but there's a good chance they will return next season to anchor the team.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 25-10 season that ended with an overtime 82-81 loss to Stanford in the South Regional of the NCAA tournament.
Crean went 190-96 at Marquette. He made the NCAA Final Four with Dwyane Wade in 2003, but the Golden Eagles hadn't won another NCAA tournament game until they beat Kentucky in the first round of this year's tournament.
