Wiggins transferring from UConn

STORRS, Conn. (AP) -Connecticut announced sophomore guard Doug Wiggins has asked to be released from his scholarship so he can transfer.

Coach Jim Calhoun said Tuesday he respects Wiggins' decision and the school will help him finish the semester in good standing.

Wiggins, who averaged 6.8 points in 30 games this seaon, was suspended from the team for two games in January after he and sophomore guard Jerome Dyson were caught on campus with alcohol.

Last month, Calhoun had said that ``one young man'' had really grown from his suspension, and talked about his plans for Dyson, including possible workouts this summer with former Huskies star Ben Gordon, who plays for the Chicago Bulls. However, Calhoun had refused to discuss Wiggins' status.

Wiggins played at East Hartford High School and came to UConn after backing out of an oral commitment to Big East rival St. John's.
