SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Centenary's Lance Hill and Tyrone Hamilton each scored 24 points as the Gents edged past South Dakota State 80-77 on Thursday in the Summit League Conference debut for both teams.
The early goings of the first half were a back-and-forth affair, as neither team could get a lead larger than four before going into the locker room tied at 37. Centenary's defense played well in the opening period, holding the Jackrabbits (3-4, 0-1) to 14-of-33 shooting from the field. The Gents' offense on the other hand, shot 53 percent (16-of-30) and hit 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Midway through the second half, Centenary's offense went cold as it only hit a free throw in nearly three minutes of action. But it was the defense that kept South Dakota State from pulling away. Centenary (6-3, 1-0) forced eight turnovers by the Jackrabbits and had four steals.
SDSU's Kai Williams scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds. Ben Beran added 15, while Garrett Callahan had 14 and Clint Sargent had 10.
