DENVER (AP) -David Kummer led five Denver players in double-digit scoring as the Pioneers defeated defending Sun Belt Conference champion North Texas 63-59 Saturday to open league play.

Kummer had 14 points and six rebounds for Denver (4-6, 1-0 SBC), which never trailed.

North Texas (8-3, 0-1) fell behind after shooting 27 percent from the field in the first half before pulling to within four points, 53-49, late.

Denver, which led by as many as 13 points in the second half, made 10 straight free throws with less than two minutes to go and kept North Texas from making 3-pointers to seal the victory.

Nate Rohnert had 13 points for Denver, while Adam Tanner and Joe Jackson added 12 points each. Rob Lewis had 10.

Collin Dennis had 14 points off the bench to lead North Texas.
