MORAGA, Calif. (AP) -Freshman Justin Dehm scored a career-high 23 points to lift Furman to its first victory of the season with a 67-62 win over Howard in the consolation game of the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic on Saturday.
Dehm scored 15 first-half points, going 3-of-4 from 3-point range as the Paladins (1-11) took a 32-31 lead at intermission even though Howard (3-11) hit 75 percent from the field.
Howard took only 16 shots after turning the ball over 12 times and ended with 23 turnovers to just 10 for Furman.
The Bison, who lost their seventh straight, saw a seven-point lead evaporate in the final 4:31 of the half. Howard matched Furman with 12 first-half field goals but had only one 3-pointer to Furman's five. Three-point shooting proved the ultimate difference in the game as Howard was just 2-for-4. Furman sank 10-of-23.
Furman built a 10-point lead early in the second, but Howard cut the lead to one as Kandi Mukole hit a 3-pointer and a layin, and Kyle Riley drove for a pair of layins to make the score 43-42 with 11:27 left. A Dehm 3-pointer with 8:25 to play gave Furman a 52-46 lead, and he scored with 6:00 to play to put Furman ahead 54-50.
George Brozos and Alex Opacic had 12 apiece for Furman. Myatt led Howard with 19. Riley added 14 and Mukole 11.
