BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Canisius College guards Frank Turner and Willie Hassell combined for 34 points as Canisius defeated Maine 81-70 in non-conference men's collegiate basketball action at the Koessler Center Monday afternoon.
Turner had a team-high 18 points while Hassell came off the bench to score 16 points, 12 in the first half as the Golden Griffins took a 47-37 halftime lead. Canisius (2-10) made its first three field goals to take an 8-2 lead and never trailed.
After Maine's Kaimondre Owes tied the game at 20 with a putback at 11:25, Canisius went on a 10-2 run.
Owes had a game-high 21 points in the first game of the season for the midyear transfer from Saint Peter's (N.J.). Mark Socoby added 17 points for the Black Bears, 14 coming in the first half.
Maine (4-8) cut the lead to one, 66-65, after Junior Bernal sank two free throws with 4:17 to play. But the Black Bears struggled from the foul line for the rest of the contest, making only one of its last six foul shots. Phil Tchekane Bofia and Burnal scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Canisius' Tomas Vazquez-Simmons had a career-high 15 points to go with a game-high seven rebounds.
