JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -Ben Smith scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the second half to lead Jacksonville to a 74-55 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.
Smith, who hit a career high 33 points two nights earlier in Jacksonville's win over Stetson, made just three baskets but connected on 9-of-11 free throws in 34 minutes of action.
Jacksonville (5-8, 2-0) led 37-34 at halftime and held a 53-46 lead with just over seven minutes left in the game. That's when the Dolphins began to pull away. Smith accounted for eight points to lead Jacksonville on a 21-9 scoring surge the rest of the game.
Lehmon Colbert's two free throws with 5:24 left gave the Dolphins their first double-digit lead at 59-49. Jacksonville led 65-55 with two minutes left, but scored the final nine points in the game to account for the 19-point margin.
Smith was supported by Colbert, who had 15 points, and Evan Jefferson, who finished with 13 points.
Casey Wohlleb led Florida Gulf Coast (5-10, 1-1) with 13 points.
