SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -Rille Luettgerodt scored 14 points and made three free throws in the final 15 seconds as Hawaii held off a late San Jose State rally and beat the Spartans 85-79 in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday night.
Matt Gibson added 18 points, five rebounds and eight assists for the Warriors (5-9, 1-1), who had lost five of six and were winless on the road before beating San Jose State for the 10th straight time.
Hawaii led by as many as 17 and was ahead 78-66 with 1:21 left to play when the Spartans went on a 12-4 run without the benefit of a fieldgoal. All 12 points came at the free throw line, seven from Justin Graham who also scored on a driving lay-up with nine seconds remaining to pull San Jose State within 83-79 with nine seconds remaining.
But Luettgerodt, who had only two points in the first half, made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win and end a harrowing weekend for the Warriors.
Hawaii was scheduled to fly into San Jose early Friday afternoon but had to be rerouted to Fresno due to high winds at the San Jose airport. Three hours later, pilots made another attempt to land at San Jose and were successful.
The Warriors, some of whom acknowledged being shaken up by the incident before playing the Spartans, showed no lingering effects when the game began. After falling behind 2-0, Hawaii took the lead on a Gibson lay-up and never looked back.
Bobby Nash had 14 points and Jared Dillinger scored 13 for the Warriors.
Graham finished with a career-high 29 points for San Jose State (6-7, 0-2), which shot just 32 percent in the first half. Chris Oakes added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Hawaii led by 14 at halftime and pushed the advantage to 52-35 points on Luettgerodt's basket with 16:40 remaining. The Spartans responded with a 14-4 run but the Warriors stopped the rally on Adhar Mayen's 14-foot jumper and later increased their lead to 68-54 on Jared Dillinger's 3-pointer with 5:53 left to play.
San Jose State stayed close, however, and made 12 free throws over a span of 1:39 to close within 83-79 with nine seconds remaining before Luettgerodt sealed the win for Hawaii with a pair of free throws of his own with seven seconds left.
