JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) -Joe Ross Merritt scored 15 points to lead Samford to a 57-53 victory over Jacksonville State on Monday night.
Samford (7-7, 4-2 Ohio Valley Conference) led by as many as 16 points in both halves and never let Jacksonville State (2-12, 0-6) take the lead.
The Bulldogs led 20-4 with 8:47 left in the first half. The Gamecocks went on a 15-3 run, cutting the halftime lead to four .
Samford again widened its lead to 16 with 7:57 left in the game. But Jacksonville State went on a 13-0 run to make it 41-38 on a fastbreak layup by Erik Adams, but Samford widened the lead right back to eight points.
Josh Bedwell had 12 points for the Bulldogs and Trey Montgomery added 11.
Jonathan Toles led the Gamecocks with 17 points and Nick Murphy had 16.
