SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -Donald Sims grabbed a key loose ball and hit two late free throws to help Appalachian State to a 52-49 win over Wofford on Thursday night.
The Terriers (8-6, 1-3 Southern Conference) trailed by one with 22 seconds left when they stole a pass. But Appalachian State's Davis Bowne tipped Wofford's next pass. Sims picked up the loose ball and was fouled with 8.4 seconds to go.
Sims hit two free throws and Drew Gibson's potential tying 3-pointer clanged off the rim at the buzzer.
The Mountaineers (8-6, 3-2) led for all but 23 seconds of the second half.
Kellen Brand led Appalachian State with 12 points, while Sims added nine points.
Shane Nichols led Wofford with 15 points, including a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left that left the Terriers down a point. Tim Johnson scored 10 points and had six rebounds for Wofford.
