LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -Led by 16 points from freshman Stephan Martin, the McNeese State bench scored 35 points to beat defending Southland Conference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 67-59 Saturday in the league opener for both teams.
Diego Kapelan came off the bench to score another 11 points for the Cowboys (7-6).
Martin hit all four of his shots from 3-point range and was 6-7 overall from the floor. He also made both of his free throws.
The Islanders (3-11) jumped off to a 10-4 lead and held a 12-10 edge with 11:43 left in the first half. But McNeese took the lead for good at 13-12 with 10:13 left.
They were up 25-20 at the end of the half, during which John Ford made nine of his 11 points. Jarvis Bradley added 10 and a team-high six rebounds.
Chris Daniels led the Islanders with 14 points and 11 rebounds. But Kleon Penn, who finished made 5 points and blocked two shots before fouling out, kept him in check most of the night. Justin Reynolds and Kevin Perkins scored 11 points each for Corpus Christi.
