HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) -Mike Jefferson scored five points in the final minute to lead High Point to a 62-61 victory over Winthrop Saturday night.
Jefferson hit a 3-pointer from the left wing and added a baseline jumper with 43 seconds left to give the Panthers (8-6) a 62-57 edge.
Following a missed free throw by Jefferson with 24 seconds left, Winthrop's Taj McCullough responded with a 3-pointer for the Eagles with 22 seconds left.
Chris Gaynor hit the first of two free throws with nine seconds left. Winthrop (9-7) retained possession on a tie up on a rebound, but Antwon Harris missed a bank shot in the lane as time ran out in the Big South Conference opener for both schools.
The teams put on a 3-point shooting exhibition in the second half to keep the game close. Winthrop went 5-for-9 in the second half after a 2-for-8 performance in the first half. High Point hit 10-of-15 3-pointers in the second half after going 2-for-13 in the first 20 minutes.
Jefferson finished with 23 points while Arizona Reid had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers.
Gaynor had 21 for Winthrop, and Harris added 11 points.
