HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -William Byrd scored 21 points to help lead Arkansas Pine Bluff to a 65-59 win over Alabama A&M Saturday night.

The Lions (6-7, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) shot 40 percent in the first half, going 12-of-30 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Jarvis Gunter was the only other Lions player who scored in double digits, with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Alabama A&M (4-9, 1-2) was never far behind, trailing 31-29 at the break after shooting 33.3 percent in the half and going 10-of-11 from the free throw line.

The Bulldogs were buoyed by Trant Simpson's game-high 26 points. He was the only A&M player in double digits.

Byrd scored to break a 48-48 tie with 5:18 left to play and a successful layup from Tim Hamilton put the Lions ahead. They stayed in the lead the rest of the way.
