MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -Anthony Newell scored 19 points to lead five Ball State players in double figures as the Cardinals defeated Central Michigan 82-69 on Sunday.
The win was the second in the three games Newell has played for the Cardinals (2-12, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) since missing nine straight games with a foot injury. Newell, who led Ball State with 12 rebounds, hit eight of 11 shots against Central Michigan (6-8, 1-1) and has averaged 19.7 points since his return.
Peyton Stovall and Melvin Goins each scored 17 for the Cardinals, while Malik Perry had 12 points and Brandon Lampley scored 11 points by shooting 11-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Giordan Watson scored 12 points, Jordan Bitzer had 11 points and Jeremy Allen added 10 to lead the Chippewas.
Three Central Michigan players fouled out as 34 fouls were called against the Chippewas, against 19 for Ball State. The Cardinals were 33-of-51 on free throws, while Central Michigan was 9-17.
