BOONE, N.C. (AP) -Freshman Donald Sims scored a season-high 28 points to lead Appalachian State past Chattanooga 92-83 on Thursday night.
Donte Minter added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Jeremy Clayton tied a school record by blocking eight shots for the Mountaineers (10-6, 5-2 Southern Conference), who won their fifth straight by handing the Mocs (12-6, 7-1) their first loss in league play.
Nicchaeus Doaks had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Chattanooga. Khalil Hartwell and Stephen McDowell each had 14 points for the Mocs, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.
Sims scored the most points by an Appalachian State player this season, and Minter scored nine points during the late 12-4 run that broke the game open for the Mountaineers, giving them an 11-point lead.
Appalachian State pushed its lead to 64-49 with 13 1/2 minutes left on consecutive 3-pointers by Sims and Ryann Abraham, before Chattanooga responded with a 17-5 burst of its own during the next 5:48 to make it a three-point game. That's when Minter took over and led the run that sealed the game for the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State blocked 10 Chattanooga shots, one shy of the Holmes Center record.
