LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -Shamir McDaniel scored 14 points and DeLuis Ramirez added 13 as Sam Houston State claimed a 64-49 victory Thursday over McNeese State in Southland Conference action.
Sam Houston (14-2, 3-1) also got 11 points from Ashton Mitchell but McNeese held the team's leading scorer, Ryan Bright, to just five points.
The Cowboys (7-7, 1-1) had the advantage in the first half when they rolled up a 14-2 lead and didn't allow a Bearkat basket until almost four minutes had lapsed in the game. McNeese would lead the rest of the half and take a 22-20 edge into the intermission.
But in the second half, it was all Sam Houston. The Bearkats took the lead for good at 30-29 with 14:42 left on a free throw by Ashton Mitchell and went on to the win - Sam Houston's first in the last four meetings between the two teams.
McNeese State's John Ford led all scorers with 16 points, including three 3-pointers late in the game. The Cowboys' Kleon Penn had 11 rebounds and four blocked shots on the night.
