MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -Andrew Hayles scored 18 points in helping Alabama State roll to a 73-55 victory over Alabama A&M Saturday night.
Alabama State (8-7, 4-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) built a 41-18 first half lead by holding held A&M (4-11, 1-4) to only three field goals.
ASU started the second half flat and A&M took advantage. The Bulldogs slowly whittled away at the lead until they found themselves down only 12, at 50-38, with 10:05 left in the game.
But Hayles took over the game, first drilling a 3-pointer off a fast break, then slicing through the Bulldog defense and past shot blocker Mickell Gladness for a layup.
He capped his personal 7-0 run with a jump shot over two defender to give ASU a 57-40 margin to seal the game.
Richard Lott and Brandon Gordon each scored 11 points. Brandon Brooks had the game's only double-double, with 12 points and 10 assists.
Evan Hilton scored a career high 21 points to lead A&M. Jonathan Belt followed with 11 off the bench and Gladness tallied 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
