FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -Reserve guard Marcio Lassiter scored a career-high 17 points and point guard Junior Russell had 16 Wednesday to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 72-61 win over UC Riverside.
The Titans improved to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the Big West and completed a season sweep of the Highlanders, who got 14 points from Larry Cunningham and 13 from Sean Cunningham but fell to 4-13, 1-5.
Fullerton played without its leading scorer, Josh Akognon, who averages 21 points per game but was sidelined by a sprained finger on his shooting hand. Both Frank Robinson (10 points) and Scott Cutley (6 points) scored well under their season averages of 16 and 14 points, respectively, but Cutley had a game-high 9 rebounds and Robinson grabbed 7.
UCR shot only 39 percent from the floor, 29 percent in the first half. Fullerton shot 50 percent and won the game at the foul line, making 20 of 25 while UCR made only 7 of 13.
Fullerton led the entire game despite a scoring slump late in the first half that saw the Titans go 6 minutes without scoring and 8 minutes without a field goal. A 20-9 lead at 9:02 dwindled to 20-18 at 5:54 but Marcus Crenshaw hit a 3-pointer and Lassiter hit two more, all in the final 1:17 of the period for a 32-22 halftime lead.
The biggest lead of the second half was 15 points, and the Highlanders never got closer than 7 points.
