FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -Ryon Howard's putback with 4.1 seconds left lifted Sacred Heart to a dramatic 77-76 victory over Long Island University Thursday night.
Sacred Heart trailed 76-75 after LIU's Eugene Kotorobai hit a pair of free throws with 19.4 seconds remaining.
After a pair of time-outs by the Pioneers, Luke Granato's 3-pointer bounced off the rim and landed in the hands of Howard, who hit the game-winning layup.
LIU guard Jaytornah Wisseh's desperation shot from just inside half court was wide of the rim as the final buzzer sounded.
Brice Brooks led Sacred Heart with a career-high 24 points as the Pioneers, who started the year 0-6, improved to 10-10 (7-2 Northeast Conference). Granato and Chauncey Hardy each had 11 points for the Pioneers and Howard and Drew Shubik had 10 apiece.
Wisseh topped LIU (10-8, 2-5) with 21 points. Kellen Adams finished with 19 and David Hicks 12.
Sacred Heart raced out to a 17-7 lead but failed to score a basket in the final 6:54 of the first half and trailed 40-35 at halftime. LIU shot just 14 of 44 from the floor in the half, but outrebounded Sacred Heart, 32-19, while grabbing 20 offensive rebounds.
