PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -Kramer Knutson and Taishi Ito scored 11 points each to lead Portland to a 73-63 non-league victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday.
Robin Smeulders added 10 points for the Pilots (7-13), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Demarcus Hall had to 20 points for the Roadrunners (7-14), who are in the their first full year at the Division I level.
Portland often falls behind in the first half and did on Friday when CSUB went on a 15-2 run to take a 29-24 lead with four minutes left in the opening period.
But Ethan Niedermeyer hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute of the first half to give Portland a 32-31 lead at the break.
Portland never trailed after that and had a 62-47 lead after five players hit three-pointers during a 7 1/2-minute stretch.
The Roadrunners made it interesting with a full-court press that led to 11 unanswered points, cutting Portland's lead to 62-58 with 3:34 left.
But Portland scored the next seven points to lead 69-58 lead with 1:30 remaining.
Portland shot 50 percent from the field against 39 percent for the Roadrunners, who could not cash in on Portland's 12 turnovers.
Trent Blakley and Alex Johnson had 11 points apiece for the Roadrunners.
