COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -Greivis Vasquez scored 25 points, James Gist had 17, and Maryland extended Virginia's road woes with an 85-75 victory Wednesday night.

After facing Atlantic Coast Conference powers North Carolina and Duke in succession, the Terrapins (13-8, 3-3) had no problem against the last-place Cavaliers (11-8, 1-5). Maryland grabbed an 11-point lead in the opening three minutes, expanded the margin to 17 early in the second half and coasted to its seventh win in nine games.

Eric Hayes contributed 15 points and nine assists, and Landon Milbourne scored 13 to help Maryland coach Gary Williams earn his 598th career victory.

Sean Singletary scored 23 for Virginia, including 17 in the second half, to extend his ACC-best streak of reaching double figures to 41 straight games. But the Cavaliers lost their sixth straight ACC road game since defeating Maryland on Jan. 16, 2007.

Calvin Baker scored a career-high 17 points and Mamadi Diane had 16 for the Cavaliers, who have lost three in a row and six of seven overall.

Maryland missed a chance to upset Duke on Sunday by letting a 9-point lead evaporate early in the second half. Determined to avoid a repeat performance against the Cavaliers, the Terrapins used a 9-2 run after halftime to go up 52-35. Vasquez got it started with a 3-pointer, and reserve forward Dave Neal sandwiched two baskets around a pair of Virginia free throws before Milbourne capped the surge with two foul shots.

A dunk by Diane got the Cavaliers to 76-71 with two minutes left, but two free throws by Gist and a follow-shot by Bambale Osby sealed the win.

Hayes and Vasquez each scored 13 points, and the Terrapins forced eight turnovers in taking a 43-33 halftime lead. Diane kept Virginia within striking distance with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting.

Maryland hit its first six shots, and Hayes and Vasquez both connected twice from beyond the arc to help the Terrapins build an 18-7 lead. A 15-foot jumper by Gist and a 3-pointer by Vasquez made it 30-17 with nine minutes elapsed.

At that point, Maryland was 12-for-17 from the floor, including 6-for-10 from 3-point range.
