NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -John Bauman scored 19 points and Columbia answered every run Yale made on the way to a 71-58 win Friday night.
Columbia (8-10, 1-2 Ivy League) scored the first six points of the game and never trailed. The Lions led 11-2 lead as Ben Nwachukwu scored nine points in the opening 3 minutes. Columbia finished with a 35-29 lead at the break.
The Lions extended the lead to 10 points until Yale rallied and cut the deficit to 47-45. But the Lions got consecutive 3-pointers from Mack Montgomery and Joe Bova to start a 16-5 run and held off Yale the rest of the way.
Yale (7-10, 1-2) was led by Travis Pinick and Caleb Holmes with 12 points apiece. Columbia held the Bulldogs? leading scorer Eric Flato without a field goal. He finished with six points.
The Lions shot 51 percent for the game and hit their first 16 free throws. Nwachukwu finished with 11 points and Montgomery had 10. Columbia also out-rebounded Yale 31-19.
