LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -Darren Fells scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds to lift UC Irvine to a 70-48 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday.
Fells made six of nine shots and recorded his fourth double-double of the season as the Anteaters defeated the 49ers for just the fourth time in the last 20 games. Michael Hunter scored 16 points and Patrick Sanders added 15 points for UC Irvine (9-12, 4-4 conference).
UC Irvine broke open a close game midway through the first half with a 17-4 run over a span of 10 minutes. Hunter's basket with 6:25 gave the Anteaters a 29-13 lead. The 49ers cut the UCI lead to 29-20 on a free throw by Chris Peys but the Anteaters responded with a 9-1 run and lead 38-21 at the break.
The 49ers, who shot 29 percent in the second half, never got closer than 15 points in the final 20 minutes. UC Irvine shot 53 percent for the game, including 8-of-16 3-pointers. Long Beach State has lost five straight and 10 of 11.
Donavan Morris led the 49ers (4-16,1-7) with 20 points.
The victory left UCI coach Pat Douglas (162-150) two wins from becoming the all-time winningest coach in Anteaters' history.
