PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -Playing without its leading scorer and with four freshmen starting, St. John's got 15 points from Eugene Lawrence and Justin Burrell in a 52-45 victory over Rutgers Wednesday night.

Larry Wright had 10 points and six rebounds for St. John's (9-12, 3-7 Big East), which has won two straight Big East road games for the first time since beating Georgetown and Virginia Tech in January 2003. The Red Storm were without leading scorer Anthony Mason Jr., who suffered an ankle contusion at South Florida Saturday.

The Scarlet Knights (10-14, 2-9), whose only lead was 2-0, got 11 from Mike Coburn. Rutgers shot just 28.8 percent and scored the least amount of points against St. John's this year.

In taking a 24-14 lead, St. John's had its best defensive half of the season while holding Rutgers to a season-low in first-half points for the second straight game. The Knights had 18 in the first half against Louisville Saturday.

The Scarlet Knights' shooting woes continued into the second half. With the score 34-21, Wright scored four points in a 7-0 run that opened St. John's biggest lead at 39-21.
