LOGAN, Utah - Jaycee Carroll scored 26 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Utah State past San Jose State 78-73 Saturday night.
Gary Wilkinson also scored 15 for the Aggies (18-6, 8-1 Western Athletic Conference) and Tai Wesley added 13.
C.J. Webster scored a career-high 21 points for the Spartans (10-13-2-8 WAC), Tim Pierce had 15, while DaShawn Wright added 12 and Chris Oakes 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The teams traded leads nine times in the first five minutes of the second half. USU then went on a 12-0 run to take a 50-40 lead.
San Jose tried to catch the Aggies with 3-point shots, but were only 3-of-11 in the second half, 5-of-17 for the game. San Jose also only made 10 points on the free-throw line, while USU was 28-of-32.
USU stretched the lead to 15 points late in the game, but the Spartans brought the score to 73-68 with 27 seconds to play on a layup and free throw by Webster. USU then made five points on free throws to offset a 3-point shot by Pierce and another basket from Webster.
In the first half, USU had the early lead but San Jose took the lead 24-23 on two free throws by Pierce with 5:33 to play. The Spartans kept the lead until Carroll dropped in a short jumper with 27 seconds left in the half, making the score 32-32 at halftime.
