BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) -Herbie Allen and Anthony Johnson scored 16 points apiece to lead the Fairfield University men's basketball team over Iona, 68-59 Sunday.
Trailing 50-49 in the second half, the Stags (10-14, 8-6 MAAC) took control of the game with back-to-back 3-pointers from Allen and senior Mamadou Diakhate.
Allen's basket came with 7:24 to play and Fairfield did not trail the remainder of the game.
After Allen?s basket, Marty O'Sullivan took a charge at the other end by Iona's Devon Clarke that led to Diakhate's 3-pointer, which gave Fairfield a 55-50 lead with 6:55 left in the game.
O'Sullivan and Diakhate each finished with nine points.
In the second half, Iona (10-16, 6-8) hit just 29.2 percent (7-for-24) of their shots, while Fairfield hit shot 63.2 percent (12-for-19).
Dexter Gray scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the second half to lead Iona. Milan Prodanvoic added 11 points. Gary Springer and Clarke each had 10.
The Stags took their largest lead of the first half, 27-21 with 5:30 remaining, on three foul shots from O'Sullivan, but Iona climbed back into it, using an 8-0 run in just under two minutes to go up 29-27.
The Gaels would carry a 34-33 lead into halftime behind six points apiece from Springer and Prodanovic. Johnson led the Stags in the half with 10 points, including two spectacular dunks, and two blocks.
Jonathan Han had eight assists for the Stags and two steals.
