PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) -Ed Tyson scored 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting and freshman Ishmawiyl McFadden added a career-high 14 points as Md.-Eastern Shore upset Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference No. 2 Hampton 68-62 Monday night.
Tyson scored seven of the Hawks 11 points over the final 1:43 of play as they used an 11-4 run to pick up the win.
UMES (4-21, 2-8) stayed close in the first half until the Pirates (13-9, 7-3) took advantage of a 10-3 run to take a 33-26 lead into the break. The Hawks went on a 16-4 run late in the second half cutting the lead to 53-52 with 5:53 left before the two teams started trading buckets.
Md.-Eastern Shore took its first lead of the second half on a pair of free throw by Tyson, who then stole the ball on the ensuing possession and scored for a 61-58 Hawks lead.
The Hawks outrebounded the Pirates 41-24 and scored 24 points off Hampton turnovers. Rashad West led Hampton with 19 points, Theo Smalling added 11 and Adrian Woodward 10.
UMES had not beaten Hampton since the 1999-00 season.
