ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) -David Carson scored a career-high 18 points against his former school, leading Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne to a 71-66 victory over Oakland Saturday night.

Carson, who transferred to IPFW (11-14, 8-6 Summit League) after his freshman season, was playing at Oakland for the first time since the move, and heard chants of ``Trai-tor!'' from the home fans.

The win was just IPFW's second in 14 road games this season - the first coming last week at Centenary - but moved the Mastodons into a tie for third in the conference with Oakland (13-12, 8-6).

Jaraun Burrows added 17 for IPFW and DeWitt Scott scored 13.

Derick Nelson led Oakland with 18, becoming the seventh Golden Grizzlies player to score 1,000 career points since the program moved to Division I, but he missed a key free throw in the final 90 seconds.

Down 32-26 at halftime, IPFW rallied and took a 41-40 lead on a Scott 3-pointer with 13:46 remaining. The Golden Grizzlies answered with a 5-1 run, but the Mastodons scored the next nine points. Jaraun Burrows capped the run with a 3-point play that put IPFW up 51-45 with 9:55 left.

The Mastodons increased their margin to as many as 11, but Oakland answered the 15-2 run with a 14-4 surge of their own came back to make it 62-61 with 2:30 left.

Carson fouled Nelson, but Oakland's leading scorer missed the front end of a one-and-one, preserving the IPFW lead. Scott then hit a 3-pointer for a 65-61 edge with 47 seconds to go, and the Mastodons clinched the game from the line.
