ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -Reggie Williams had 23 points and 11 rebounds as VMI used an early scoring run to beat North Carolina-Asheville 97-75 Saturday for its third straight win.
The Keydets (13-11, 5-5 Big South Conference) took control with a 20-5 run to race to a 20-11 lead. Willie Bell led the early run with two 3-point baskets and two layups.
VMI pushed the edge to 42-25 at the 2:20 mark when Christian Hunter sank a 3-pointer before UNC-Asheville (18-7, 7-3) got two baskets from Sean Smith to close to 42-29 at halftime.
A Chavis Holmes jumper extended VMI's lead to 70-47 with 10:22 to play. The Bulldogs made one last push, going on a 9-2 run led by seven points from Smith to close to 70-56 with 8:07 left. The Keydets snuffed out the comeback with an 18-5 run, keyed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Chavis and Travis Holmes to take an 88-61 lead.
Chavis Holmes had 21 points for VMI. Bell finished with 19 and Travis Holmes had 14.
Smith scored a career-high 23 points for the Bulldogs, who lost their third straight game. Vincent James scored 13 points, and reserve John Williams had 12.
