CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -David Marek scored 15 points and hit two free throws with half a second on the clock to lead Southern Utah to a 72-67 win over North Dakota State on Saturday.
Geoff Payne scored 12 points for the Thunderbirds (8-17, 6-8 Summit League), who won their third straight for the first time this season.
Southern Utah's Tyler Quinney, Dax Crum and Cris Hoopes scored 11 points each, and Quinney had eight rebounds.
Ben Woodside led the Bison (13-13, 7-8) with 23 points, while Brett Winkelman added 22.
The Thunderbirds went 19-for-22 from the foul line in the second half and didn't miss until the last 15 seconds of the game. Southern Utah out-rebounded North Dakota State 32-30.
Marek's 3-pointer from the left wing gave Southern Utah its biggest lead, 55-38, with 4:48 left, but the Bison had an 11-0 run highlighted by Mike Nelson s 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 55-49 with 2:56 remaining.
Woodside scored 10 of his points in the final two minutes, and Winkelman hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to cut the deficit to 70-67.
However, the Thunderbirds went 11-for-14 from the foul line down the stretch, and Marek's free throws clinched the win.
