CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -Ray Barbosa scored 21 points and Darryl Proctor added 14 as UMBC won its first American East regular season title with a 71-68 overtime victory Saturday over New Hampshire.
The win was the eighth straight for the Retrievers (20-7, 12-2 American East), their longest streak since winning 11 straight in the 1998-1999 season. New Hampshire (8-19, 5-10) has lost six of its past seven games.
Tyrece Gibbs scored 22 points, Alvin Abreu had 18 and Tyrone Conley scored 12 for the Wildcats.
New Hampshire controlled most of the second half, but UMBC took a 57-54 lead on a 3-pointer by Barbosa with 1:36 remaining. Conley tied the game for New Hampshire on the ensuing possession to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Jaye Greene hit two 3-pointers, Barbosa was six of six from the free-throw line and UMBC outscored New Hampshire 14-11 to seal the win.
