NEW YORK (AP) -James Ulrich had 13 points and 15 rebounds and Durell Vinson had 11 points and 14 rebounds to help Wagner tie the school record for victories in a season, beating Fairleigh Dickinson 78-67 Thursday night.
Jamal Smith had 20 points for the Seahawks (21-7, 14-3 Northeast Conference), who reached 21 wins for the fourth time in school history and the first since 2002-03 when Wagner made its only NCAA tournament appearance. The win was the ninth in 11 games for the Seahawks, who clinched the No. 2 seed in the NEC tournament behind Robert Morris.
Manny Ubilla had 29 points and Sean Baptiste added 17 for the Knights (7-20, 3-14), who lost their fifth straight and eighth of nine. Fairleigh Dickinson coach Tom Greene remains stuck on 399 career wins. He has a 399-327 record in 24 seasons with the Knights.
Wagner took a 22-10 lead in the opening 9 minutes as Ulrich hit his first four shots from the field. The Knights were within 37-30 at halftime and despite playing four starters at least 38 minutes and only seven players overall, they were within 52-50 when Ubilla hit a 3-pointer with 8:27 to play.
Wagner, which finished with a 51-28 rebound advantage, was able to take control underneath behind Vinson, who made four of his last five shots after starting 1-for-8, and Ulrich. The two combined for 10 offensive rebounds.
A 3-pointer by Smith as the shot clock expired gave Wagner a 70-57 lead with 3:16 to go. Smith finished 4-for-5 from behind the arc and the Seahawks were 8-for-25 compared to the Knights' 8-for-27 from there.
