FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -Jonathan Heard had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cal State Northridge to an 82-74 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night.
Heard moved into second place in career scoring for Northridge with 1,326 points in four seasons
Rob Haynes and Deon Tresvant each added 12 points and Tremaine Townsend had 14 rebounds for the Matadors (19-7, 11-2 Big West), who won four of five and extended their lead over second-place Fullerton to 1 1/2 games.
Ray Reed scored a season-high 18 points and Frank Robinson had 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Titans (18-8, 10-4). Josh Akognon set a single-season school record for 3-point baskets with 90.
Rodrigue Mels made a pair of 3-point shots in 16 seconds to put Northridge ahead 32-27 with 5:09 left in the first half. Mels' baskets were part of an 18-4 surge that gave the Matadors a 36-28 lead with 1:33 remaining in the half.
Fullerton rallied to move ahead 58-57 with 9:15 to play but Haynes made a 3-pointer and a hook shot within 36 seconds to give Northridge a 62-58 lead with 8:10 left.
Reed made two free throws with 4:34 left to draw the Titans within 69-67 but Calvin Chitwood's jumper and Heard's layin extended the lead to 73-67 with 3:35 to play.
The Matadors shot 54.8 percent in the second half and forced Fullerton to shoot a season-low 13.6 percent from 3-point range for the game.
