NEW YORK (AP) - Anthony Mason's 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left gave St. John's a 65-62 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday and stopped the Red Storm's five-game losing streak.
Mason finished with 24 points and went 5-for-7 from 3-point range for the Red Storm (11-17, 5-11 Big East). Justin Burrell and Larry Wright each added 12 points and D.J. Kennedy had 10 for St. John's.
Jamar Nutter made a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to tie the game for Seton Hall before Mason's 3 from the top of the circle put St. John's ahead for good. Seton Hall's final possession ended with the Red Storm knocking away a long inbounds pass.
Nutter and John Garcia scored 14 points each to lead the Pirates (7-12, 7-9), while Brian Laing added 12 points.
Two free throws by Jeremy Hazell gave Seton Hall a 55-45 lead with 4:51 left in the second half. The Red Storm then closed with a 20-7 run, with Mason scoring 11 points and hitting three 3-pointers.
Wright made two 3s in the run, the second putting St. John's ahead 60-59 with 59 second remaining. Burrell made two free throws to make it 62-59 with 20 seconds to go before Nutter tied it.
The win came one day after St. John's announced that coach Norm Roberts will return next season to finish his current contract. He and athletic director Chris Monasch will meet after the season to pursue an extension.
