MIAMI (AP) -Demetric Bennett scored a game-high 30 points as South Alabama assured itself the top seed in next weeks Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 74-55 victory over Fla. International on Saturday night.
Alex Galindo got 15 points and five rebounds for Fla. International (9-19, 6-12 SBC) who lost for the third-straight time.
South Alabama (25-5, 16-2 SBC) jumped out to a 1-4 advantage and never looked back. Despite shooting only 40-percent from the floor in the first half, they built a 33-18 lead and went into the dressing room at the half up, 33-22.
Fla. International closed to within eight points twice, the last being 39-31 on a Chris Fuller basket, before South Alabama went on a 7-0 run.
The Jaguars, who got scoring from nine different players, led by as many as 20 points late in the game before clearing the bench.
Fla. International also dominated the boards, out-rebounding FIU, 41-23, with 5-foot-8 guard Daon Merritt leading the way with a game-high eight rebounds.
