ELON, N.C. (AP) -Nicchaeus Doaks hit a 3-point shot with 30.2 seconds remaining to give Chattanooga a 57-56 victory over Elon and a share of the Southern Conference North Division championship Saturday.
The Phoenix went on an early 11-2 run, but surrendered 10 straight points and fell behind 24-20 at halftime. The Mocs (18-12, 13-7 Southern Conference) ran that lead up to 36-26, only to see Elon (11-18, 9-11) come back and eventually tie the score at 52 on a dunk by Brett James with 3:52 to go.
James added a pair of free throws at 2:40 to cap an 8-2 run and give Elon a 54-52 lead. Chattanooga's Marcus Watts converted a miss by Khalil Hartwell into a driving layup with 2:14 to play, tying the score at 54.
James hit a jumper with 57 seconds left from just inside the 3-point line to put the Phoenix back up by two, setting up Doaks' game-winning basket.
Elon had the ball out of bounds and under its basket with 2.4 seconds to go, but James missed an 18-footer as time ran out.
Watts led Chattanooga with 15 points. Doaks added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Montell Watson scored 15 for Elon and James added 11.
