KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Sophomore Johnathan Jones connected on six free throws in the final 48 seconds as Oakland outlasted Missouri-Kansas City 85-75 Saturday at Municipal Auditorium.
The victory was the third in the last four games for the Grizzlies (16-13, 11-7), who closed out their regular season by clinching the No. 3 seed for the Summit League Conference tournament, which begins play March 8.
Jones led all scorers with 24 points and finished 10-for-10 from the line. Oakland made each of their last 10 free throw attempts over the final 1:07.
Trailing 30-21 with 1:57 left in the first half, the Grizzlies used a 15-0 run to take a 36-30 lead early in the second half.
Oakland stretched their lead to 53-43 with 11:33 left in the game on a layup by Tim Williams. Williams and Derick Nelson scored 12 apiece for the Grizzlies while Erik Kangas added 21. Nelson led all rebounders with 14, matching a career best.
UMKC (11-20, 6-12) cut the lead to three, 66-63, on three free throws by Reggie Hamilton with 5:03 left in the game, but could get no closer.
Hamilton led the Kangaroos with a career-high 23 points. Dane Brumagin scored 15 points, while Tim Blackwell had 13 and Brian Gettinger added 11.
