DAVIS, Calif. (AP) -Freshman Mark Payne had 19 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds to help UC Davis beat Sacramento State 83-77 in a non-conference game on Saturday night.
Dominic Calegari had 22 points and Vince Oliver added 18 points for the Aggies (9-20), who ended an 11-game losing streak.
Vinnie McGhee Jr. had 24 points, including six 3-pointers, and Clark Woods scored 15 points for the Hornets (4-23), who are 0-15 on the road this season.
After Calegari's trey pushed the Aggies' lead to 75-67 with 1:26 remaining, the Hornets went on an 8-0 run completed by a 3-point shot by Clark Woods to make the score 75-73 with 53 seconds left. The Aggies finished the game by outscoring the Hornets 8-4 in the last 52 seconds.
The Aggies got off to a 13-0 start, but the Hornets aggressively charged back to outscore UC Davis 36-21 in the last 16 minutes and took a 36-34 halftime lead on a basket by Darnell Ferguson at the 1:04 mark.
The Aggies failed to score in the last 2:53 in the first half after hitting their first five shots of the game.
