MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -Desmond Yates scored 22 points and Middle Tennessee held off Louisiana-Monroe 74-69 Wednesday night in the first round of the Sun Belt tourney.
Middle Tennessee (15-14, 12-7 Sun Belt), the No. 4 seed, had comfortable leads in the second half until the 13th-seeded Warhawks (10-21, 4-15) pulled to 70-66 with 12 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Jordan Payne.
Kevin Kanaskie then made two free throws for the Blue Raiders to make it 72-66. Payne followed with another 3-pointer to close out the Louisiana-Monroe scoring.
Theryn Hudson had a career high 19 points for Middle Tennessee, and Kanaskie and Demetrius Green scored 11 each.
Payne scored 20 for the Warhawks. Raphelle Turner had 12 and Afam Nweke 10.
