NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -Brett Johnson scored 16 points to lead Elon to a 52-37 victory over Furman on Friday night in the opening round of the Southern Conference tournament.
The No. 7 seed Phoenix (12-18) advance to play second-seeded Chattanooga in the quarterfinals Saturday night. The Paladins end their season at 7-23.
The game was tied at 19 at half, but Elon led by seven points two minutes into the second half and slowly stretched the advantage. The 15-point final margin was the biggest of the game for the Phoenix.
Furman's shooting went cold in the final 20 minutes. The Paladins shot just 4-of-23 (17.4 percent) from the field and made only 1-of-7 3-pointers in the second half. They would make only 10 baskets the entire game.
Elon shot 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field in the second half and 40 percent (18-of-45) for the game.
George Brozos led Furman with eight points, while Conner Nolte added seven points and eight rebounds.
Montell Watson scored 10 points and Ola Atoyebi added seven points and 10 rebounds for the Phoenix.
