Pepperdine 50, Portland 48

3/8/2008 12:45 AM

SAN DIEGO (AP) -Tyrone Shelley scored 21 points, including the go-ahead points in overtime, to give Pepperdine a 50-48 win over Portland in the first round of the West Coast Conference tournament Friday night.

Pepperdine (11-20) squandered an 11-point lead in the final 6 1/2 minutes of the second half before rebounding behind Shelley in overtime. The freshman tied the score at 48 with a short jumper at the 1:36 mark of overtime before giving the Waves a 50-48 lead with a pair of free throws with 37.5 seconds left.

Portland (9-22), which led just once in the game, missed a chance to tie when Taishi Ito missed a jumper in the lane with two seconds left.

Sherrard Watson scored 17 points to lead the Pilots, who missed six of seven shots in overtime. Nik Raivio's jumper with 3:17 left in overtime were Portland's only overtime points and gave the Pilots their only lead of the game at 48-46.

Portland trailed 44-33 with 6:28 left before outscoring Pepperdine 13-2 and tied the score at 46 on Raivio's 3-pointer with 54.2 seconds left to force overtime. Raivio finished with 12 points.

Pepperdine took control in the first half with a 27-15 halftime lead despite shooting just 35.5 percent from the field and getting outrebounded 24-10.

The sixth-seeded Waves will face No. 3 seed San Diego in a quarterfinal-round game Saturday night.
