RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Julian Conyers' free throw with 2.7 seconds left in overtime gave Coppin State a 75-74 overtime upset victory over Hampton in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament Wednesday night.
The seventh-seeded Eagles (14-20) advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2005. They will play in a Friday night semifinal against the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal game between third-seeded Norfolk State (15-14) and No. 6 Florida A&M (15-16).
Coppin State trailed 39-24 at halftime as Hampton (18-12) blanked guard Tywan McKee.
But the Eagles went on a 32-16 run in the first 11 minutes of the second half to take a 56-55 lead. The lead switched hands seven times in the rest of regulation before Hampton guard Rashad West, who scored 27 points, hit the final points of regulation - his seventh 3-pointer with 1:05 left to tie the game at 71-71.
Coppin State had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Conyers was stripped by Adrian Woodard to send the game into overtime.
Conyers put the Eagles up 73-71 on a putback with 1:19 left in the session. Woodard's 3-pointer with 47 seconds left gave Hampton a one-point lead but then Antwan Harrison, who scored 16 points, made one of two free throws with 22.2 seconds left to tie the game.
Hampton's West drove the lane to attempt a possible game-winner, but had the ball stripped from him by Conyers and then fouled the Coppin State player.
Conyers hit the first foul shot and missed the second. But McKee grabbed the rebound and threw the ball high in the air as the clock ran out.
