ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -Larry Cunningham scored a game-high 23 points as UC Riverside beat Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 62-54 Wednesday in the first round of the Big West Conference tournament.
Cunningham made four of six free throws in the closing minute to seal the victory for the seventh-seeded Highlanders (9-20).
Riverside will now play third-seeded Cal State Fullerton (21-8) in a second round game on Thursday.
Lorenzo Keeler and Titus Shelton had 13 points each for the sixth-seeded Mustangs.
With Riverside ahead by just one, Cunningham scored six straight points to give the Highlanders a 51-44 with less than three minutes remaining.
The Mustangs (13-17) pulled as close as four when Chaz Thomas made two free throws cutting Riverside's lead to 51-47, and when Keeler hit two free throws making it 58-54 with 47 seconds remaining.
The two teams split their two regular season meetings with Riverside winning the first game by four and Cal Poly winning the second in overtime by seven.
