MIAMI (AP) -Slumping Hanley Ramirez returned to the leadoff spot Thursday for the Florida Marlins after spending three weeks batting third.

Ramirez has hit .268 since moving from first to third in the order May 2, dropping his season average to .304. His slugging percentage was .591 batting leadoff and .357 batting third, and manager Fredi Gonzalez decided it was time to put Ramirez back where he has excelled.

``We want to get him going,'' Gonzalez said. ``Let's see how it works.''

Ramirez went into Thursday's game against Arizona in a 1-for-15 slump with 10 strikeouts in his previous four games. He signed a $70 million, six-year contract Saturday.

Gonzalez moved Jorge Cantu into the third spot and said he would remain there awhile.
