Clay Buchholz goes 4-plus innings in rehab start

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) -Clay Buchholz pitched four-plus innings Sunday night in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket.

On the disabled list because of a torn nail on his middle finger, Buchholz allowed one run and three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He threw 38 of his 63 pitches for strikes and topped out at 96 mph on the radar gun.

Buchholz, who tossed a no-hitter in his second major league start last season, threw almost exclusively fastballs in the first inning. He gradually started mixing in curves and changeups in the second.

The 23-year-old right-hander was scheduled to throw 65 pitches, but manager Ron Johnson removed him after Garrett Jones pulled a double into the right-field corner on a 3-2 pitch while leading off the fifth.

The Red Sox put Buchholz on the 15-day DL effective May 13 after he tore the nail on his right middle finger.

Pawtucket beat the Rochester Red Wings 11-1.
