Houston Rockets 2006 News & Notes
John Lucas (Point Guard) 7/29/2006
NEWS: The Rockets signed free agent guard John Lucas III to a multiyear contract on Friday after waiving him in January. Lucas originally signed with Houston on Dec. 29. He was waived on Jan. 4, then signed two 10-day contracts before he was released on Jan. 28.
NOTES: Lucas averaged 23 points and 7.6 assists for the Rockets in five summer-league games. Last season, Lucas averaged 2.3 points in 13 games. Lucas III, the son of former NBA star John Lucas, Jr., also played in 35 games with the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League in 2005-06.
Steve Novak (Forward) 7/26/2006
NEWS: The Rockets signed second-round draft pick Novak to a multiyear contract Wednesday.
NOTES: The 6-foot-10 Novak, 22, set the Marquette record with 354 career 3-pointers and finished 10th on the school's career scoring list. He became the sixth player in school history to reach career marks of 1,500 points and 500 rebounds. Novak also shot 93.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Vassilis Spanoulis (Point Guard) 7/20/2006
NEWS: The Houston Rockets signed Spanoulis to a multiyear contract Thursday. The Rockets originally acquired the draft rights for the 6-foot-4 guard in 2004 in a trade with Dallas for the draft rights to Luis Flores.
NOTES: Spanoulis averaged 15.5 points and 3.1 assists in 23 games of Euroleague play with Panathinaikos AO Athens last season. He shot 62 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range. Spanoulis will play for Greece in the World Basketball Championships in Japan next month.
Kirk Snyder (Shooting Guard) 7/14/2006
NEWS: Snyder was traded by the Hornets to the Houston Rockets on Friday for cash and a conditional second-round draft pick in 2008.
NOTES: Snyder, who started 40 straight games in the Hornets' backcourt last season, averaged 8.0 points and 2.4 rebounds in 68 games overall. Coach Byron Scott has said Peja Stojakovic, who agreed to a five-year, $64 million contract with the Hornets on Wednesday, will likely start at shooting guard, which made Snyder expendable.
Yao Ming (Center) 6/16/2006
NEWS: Yao said his chances of playing for China this summer in the world championships are "50-50" as he recovers from a broken left foot. The Houston Rockets center broke the fifth metatarsal in the foot on April 10 in Utah and had surgery four days later. Doctors have ordered him not to play basketball until Aug. 1. The tournament starts in Japan on Aug. 19. "Two weeks for me, I don't know. I'm going to try to get into my best shape in that time."
NOTES: Yao is undergoing a rehab process similar to when he missed 21 games last season because of toe surgery. When he returned, he averaged 26 points and 12 rebounds after the All-Star break and topped 30 points six times in March.
Yao Ming (Center) 6/15/2006
NEWS: Yao was reportedly cleared Thursday to begin running on an underwater treadmill and will begin rehabilitation on his broken foot with a personal trainer. The Houston Rockets center had surgery to repair his left foot in April 14. He'd sustained the injury in the first quarter of an 85-83 loss to the Utah Jazz on April 10.
NOTES: Yao averaged 22.3 points and 10.2 rebounds last season amidst several injuries. He'd missed 21 games earlier in the season following surgery on his big toe but averaged 35.7 points and 11.6 rebounds after February's All-Star break.
Juwan Howard (Forward) 4/18/2006
NEWS: Howard scored a season-high 31 points on 12-of-19 shooting (63.2 percent) in the Rockets' 86-83 victory over the Nuggets on Monday night.
NOTES: Howard's previous season high was a 30-point game against the Bulls on Jan. 20, and the 12-year veteran is averaging 11.8 points on 46.1 percent shooting in 79 games this season.
Yao Ming (Center) 4/15/2006
NEWS: Yao had surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot on Friday. According to general manager Carroll Dawson, the Rockets' center could be sidelined four to six months, but is expected to be ready for next season. Yao broke the fifth metatarsal in his foot in a loss to Utah last Monday.
NOTES: Yao missed 21 games earlier in the season following surgery on his big toe, but had averaged 25.7 points and 11.6 rebounds since the All-Star break.
Yao Ming (Center) 4/11/2006
NEWS: Yao broke his left foot in the first quarter of Houston's 85-83 loss to Utah on Monday and is likely finished for the rest of the season. The fourth-year center was kicked in his foot by Jazz center Mehmet Okur and tried to continue playing, but couldn't take the pain.
NOTES: The All-Star was averaging close to 23 points and 10 rebounds but with the Rockets eliminated from playoff contention and only four games remaining in the season, Yao's season is over.
Tracy McGrady (Guard-Forward) 3/17/2006
NEWS: McGrady told The Houston Chronicle on Thursday his return to the Rockets this season depends on where the team sits in the standings. He would not rule himself out for the season. McGrady added he is under strict doctor's orders to sit out another four weeks because of back spasms.
NOTES: McGrady has averaged 24.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 47 games for the Rockets this season. Considering the Rockets are out of the playoff race and not likely to enter without McGrady, it sounds like he's done for the year.
David Wesley (Shooting Guard) 3/14/2006
NEWS: Wesley's cracked rib injury is expected to sideline the guard for about a week.
NOTES:
David Wesley (Shooting Guard) 3/12/2006
NEWS: Wesley did not play in the second half of the Rockets' 88-81 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, due to a rib injury. There is no timetable for his return, but the Rockets play again on Monday against the New Jersey Nets.
NOTES: Wesley is averaging 10.6 points in 62 games for the Rockets this season.
Tracy McGrady (Guard-Forward) 3/11/2006
NEWS: McGrady could miss up to five weeks with another back injury. The Houston Rockets' guard has been sidelined with back problems on three different occasions this season and has missed a total of 15 games.
NOTES: McGrady's latest injury is reportedly not a recurrence of the chronic back problems that have plagued him since November, back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins said, but the result of a fall McGrady took in the Rockets' 102-84 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on March 5. McGrady scored 18 points, then left that game in the third quarter. He sat out a March 7 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves then left in the third quarter of a March 8 win over the Indiana Pacers.
Yao Ming (Center) 3/9/2006
NEWS: Yao scored a season-high 38 points in the Houston Rockets' 103-99 win over the Indiana Pacers Wednesday. The Rockets' center also had 10 rebounds and five blocks.
NOTES: Yao is averaging 21.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists this season. He's reached the 30 point plateau in each of his last three games (all Houston wins) with 32 against the Portland Trail Blazers on March 5, 30 against the Minnesota Timberwolves March 7 and 38 Wed.
Tracy McGrady (Guard-Forward) 3/6/2006
NEWS: McGrady departed Houston's 102-84 win over Portland Sunday with recurring problems with his back. He left in the third quarter and didn't return. He has missed a total of 18 games in three stretches because of back spasms.
NOTES: Reportedly McGrady will be a gametime decision when the Rockets face the Timberwolves in Minneapolis on Tuesday. He is averaging 24.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists a game in 46 games this season.
Jon Barry (Shooting Guard) 3/1/2006
NEWS: Barry was waived by the Houston Rockets Wednesday. The 36-year-old was averaging 4.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 20 games for the Rockets this season. He has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets and the Atlanta Hawks in his 14-year career before joining Houston in 2004-05.
NOTES: Since coming to the Rockets in a trade with the Hawks for Tyronn Lue on Dec. 23, 2004, Barry had averaged 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 73 games including two starts.
Yao Ming (Center) 2/27/2006
NEWS: Yao scored 29 points with 11 rebounds and two blocks in an 89-84 Rockets win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday. The all-star center has averaged 26.7 points with 15.7 boards and 2.0 blocks in the last three games. It is the first time he has topped 20 points and 10 rebounds in three consecutive games since returning from toe surgery on Jan. 30. He had missed 21 games.
NOTES: Yao is averaging career highs with 20.2 points and 9.6 rebounds in 35 games for the Rockets this season.
Bob Sura (Guard) 2/26/2006
NEWS: Sura is not expected to return to the Rockets this season after experiencing soreness in his knee. His rehabilitation will be moved to the offseason. Sura underwent two offseason knee procedures and back surgery that has sidelined him for all of the 2005-06 season.
NOTES: Sura averaged 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 61 games during the 2004-05 season.
Gerald Fitch (Guard) 2/23/2006
NEWS: Fitch was acquired by the Houston Rockets just before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday, in exchange for Derek Anderson to the Miami Heat.
NOTES: Fitch has scored 4.7 points in 18 games for the Heat in his rookie season.
Tracy McGrady (Guard-Forward) 2/20/2006
NEWS: Overcoming personal troubles, McGrady scored 36 points for the Western Conference in the 2006 All-Star game. The Rockets' star has missed 13 regular-season games because of back spasms and, even after returning, has continued to struggle, citing personal issues.
