Minnesota Timberwolves 2006 News & Notes
Mike James (Point Guard) 7/11/2006
NEWS: James agreed to a four-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, his agent Bill Duffy told the Associated Press. The free-agent point guard is expected to get the Timberwolves' full mid-level exception, which is worth about $5 million in 2006-07. James is coming off a career year with the Raptors, when he averaged 20.3 points and 5.8 assists in 79 games.
NOTES: James ranked fourth in the NBA in 3-point shooting (44 percent) and 11th in 3-pointers (169) made last season. Minnesota will benefit from James' presence as Troy Hudson has struggled with injuries and Marko Jaric has been inconsistent. Timberwolves' star Kevin Garnett personally called James to convince the 31-year-old guard to come to Minnesota.
Randy Foye (Guard) 7/6/2006
NEWS: Foye signed with Minnesota on Wednesday. He was the seventh overall selection by the Celtics and was traded to Portland before being dealt to the Timberwolves on draft night. The Big East Player of the Year last season at Villanova, Foye averaged 20.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He can play both guard spots.
NOTES:
Rashad McCants (Guard) 6/20/2006
NEWS: McCants will miss four to six months after microfracture surgery on his right knee, the same injury that kept Phoenix star Amare Stoudemire out for most of this season. Timberwolves orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Fischer performed the surgery Friday, and the team made the announcement Monday. Neither the team nor McCants, the Timberwolves' 2005 first-round draft pick, made the injury known before then.
NOTES: The 6-foot-4 guard from North Carolina averaged 7.9 points in 79 games this season as a rookie but topped double figures in the last 12 games. McCants shot 37.2 percent from 3-point range, a franchise record for first-year players.
Fred Hoiberg (Shooting Guard) 4/17/2006
NEWS: Hoiberg announced his retirement Monday, nearly 10 months after open-heart surgery. Hoiberg, who starred at Iowa State and played 10 seasons in the NBA, had an operation last June to repair an aneurysm in his aortic root. He was fitted with a permanent pacemaker.
NOTES: Hoiberg averaged 5.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 541 games with the Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves. Known for his deadly 3-point shot, Hoiberg connected on 39.6 percent (373-for-941) of his career attempts from downtown.
Kevin Garnett (Forward) 4/9/2006
NEWS: Garnett sat out Minnesota's game on Sunday against Atlanta with tendinitis in his right knee, snapping his NBA-leading streak of 351 games started. It was the first game the forward had missed since Feb. 19, 2001, when he sat out a game against Dallas because of personal reasons.
NOTES: With the Timberwolves eliminated from playoff contention, Minnesota coach Dwane Casey thought it was better to rest Garnett rather than risk further damage. He is averaging 21.8 points and 12.7 rebounds in 76 games this season.
Kevin Garnett (Forward) 4/5/2006
NEWS: Garnett extended his points/rebounds double-double streak to 31 straight games with 24 points and a season-high 22 rebounds in the Timberwolves' 97-92 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday.
NOTES: With his 30th straight points/rebounds double-double in Sunday's win over the Warriors, Garnett recorded the longest such streak in 23 years. Garnett is averaging 21.4 points and 14.7 rebounds during the streak.
Kevin Garnett (Forward) 4/4/2006
NEWS: Garnett posted his 30th straight points/rebounds double-double in Sunday's win over the Warriors, which is the NBA's longest streak in 23 years. The Timberwolves' forward finished the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
NOTES: Garnett is averaging 21.8 points, a league-leading 12.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 73 games this season.
Kevin Garnett (Forward) 3/30/2006
NEWS: Garnett pulled down 19 rebounds to go with 27 points in the Timberwolves' 103-91 win over the Magic on Wednesday.
NOTES: Garnett is first in the league with 57 double-doubles, and has recorded a double-double in 28 straight games. The 11-year veteran is also first in the league in rebounds, averaging 12.5 boards, and has grabbed 19 or more rebounds seven times this season.
Trenton Hassell (Guard-Forward) 3/25/2006
NEWS: Hassell will miss at least one more week because of sprains to his left knee and ankle. Rashad McCants will take the starting spot.
NOTES: Hassell has averaged 9.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 67 games with the Timberwolves this season.
Fred Hoiberg (Shooting Guard) 3/18/2006
NEWS: Hoiberg has decided against a comeback attempt for this season because of heart concerns. He was a free agent after the Timberwolves released him last August under the NBA amnesty clause. He would have been the first NBA player to play with a pacemaker, which was installed in June after an aneurysm was found.
NOTES:
Troy Hudson (Point Guard) 3/14/2006
NEWS: Minnesota Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey said Hudson continues to rehabilitate his sore right ankle, but the guard might not return this season.
NOTES: Hudson has averaged 9.5 points in 36 games this season.
Anthony Carter (Point Guard) 3/3/2006
NEWS: Carter was arrested early Friday on suspicion of drunken driving and was being held in the Hennepin County jail. The Minnesota Timberwolves' reserve point guard has a previous DWI in California in the last 10 years so he faces a gross misdemeanor charge. Timberwolves vice president Kevin McHale said in a statement issued by the team disciplinary action will be determined once further details are made clear through the legal system.
NOTES: Carter is averaging 3.6 points and 2.4 assists per game. He said in a statement through his attorney he wanted to "minimize the distraction that this incident may cause" and that this was his "responsibility to deal with." He hasn't played since tallying one rebound and one turnover in almost five minutes of play in Minnesota's 111-100 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Feb. 28.
Troy Hudson (Point Guard) 2/18/2006
NEWS: Despite reports this past week, Hudson is not expected to have season-ending surgery on his right ankle. Although the Timberwolves' point guard said Wednesday that surgery on the ankle would be necessary, his agent claimed Friday that they were looking into a better way to treat it. Hudson has struggled with the bad ankle since a preseason game in 2003.
NOTES: Averaging 9.5 points in 36 games this season, Hudson has missed the last seven games and 15 total because of injuries.
Ricky Davis (Guard-Forward) 1/28/2006
NEWS: Davis scored 26 points, grabbed a key rebound and sank two clutch free throws in his debut with Minnesota, a 96-92 victory over the Houston Rockets Friday. The 26-year-old swingman joined the Timberwolves Thursday from Boston in a seven-player deal. He hit 10 of 18 shots from the field and sank all five of his free-throws.
NOTES: Davis, an eight-year veteran, is averaging 19.8 points in 43 games this season.
Troy Hudson (Point Guard) 1/23/2006
NEWS: Hudson has missed the Timberwolves' last two games, due to a bout with the flu. The guard hopes to return to the floor in time for Tuesday's meeting with the Detroit Pistons. If he's feeling up to it, he'll try to work out with the team on Monday.
NOTES: Consider Hudson as day-to-day. Serving as a backcourt reserve this season, he is averaging 10.7 points, 3.0 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 23.6 minutes per contest.
Eddie Griffin (Forward-Center) 1/21/2006
NEWS: Griffin tied a season-high with 14 rebounds in the Timberwolves' 90-85 win over the Pacers on Friday. Griffin also had 17 points and six blocks for his third double-double of the season.
NOTES: The 6-10 center has started the last 12 games for the Timberwolves, averaging 6.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.
Kevin Garnett (Forward) 1/19/2006
NEWS: To go along with his team-high 29 points, Garnett snagged 13 rebounds in Wednesday's loss to the Boston Celtics, finishing with double-digit caroms for the 12th consecutive game. In addition, the Timberwolves' forward topped 9,000 boards for his NBA career, becoming just the sixth player in league history to record at least 16,000 points, 9,000 rebounds and 3,500 assists in his career.
NOTES: Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Charles Barkley, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone also accomplished the feat. In 36 games this season, Garnett is averaging 22.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.4 blocked shots and 1.3 steals.
Mike James (Point Guard) 1/18/2006
NEWS: After missing Sunday's win over the New York Knicks because of back spasms, James returned to the Toronto Raptors' starting lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Utah Jazz. The point guard, who has averaged 13.2 field-goal attempts per game this season, put up only eight shots in 34 minutes on Tuesday. He finished with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
NOTES: James is not playing at 100 percent, but as long as his back continues to respond to treatment, he'll be on the floor for the Raptors. In 36 contests this season, he is averaging 16.7 points, 5.0 assists and 3.2 rebounds -- all career highs.
Mike James (Point Guard) 1/16/2006
NEWS: James was held out of Sunday's meeting with the New York Knicks, due to back spasms. The guard, who was replaced in the Raptors' lineup by rookie Jose Calderon, has been listed as day-to-day. He will be re-evaluated prior to Tuesday's matchup against the Utah Jazz to determine his availability.
NOTES: James is in the midst of his best season since joining the NBA in 2001-02. Through 35 games, he is averaging 16.7 points, 5.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 34.5 minutes -- all career highs.
Kevin Garnett (Forward) 1/12/2006
NEWS: Garnett notched the 500th double-double of his NBA career, but finished just one assist shy of posting a triple-double, leading the Timberwolves to a 99-93 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. The veteran forward finished the game with 28 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists to go along with one steal and a blocked shot in 40 minutes of action.
NOTES: Even though his numbers are down a bit this season compared to the past few years, Garnett still is one of the top fantasy options available. In 33 games, he is averaging 21.9 points, 11.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.5 blocked shots and 1.4 steals.
