Sacramento Kings 2006 News & Notes
Loren Woods (Center) 8/15/2006
NEWS: The Sacramento Kings signed center Loren Woods Tuesday. Woods had spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Raptors, averaging 2.3 points and 4.1 rebounds last season. The 2001 NBA draft pick has also played for the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves who drafted him out of the University of Arizona.
NOTES: Woods could be a backup center for Brad Miller alongside Vitali Potapenko.
John Salmons (Guard-Forward) 7/25/2006
NEWS: Salmons signed a multiyear contract with the Sacramento Kings on Monday after four seasons with Philadelphia.
NOTES: Salmons, 26, averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists for the 76ers last season, playing in all 82 games. The former 2002 first-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs is averaging 5.1 points in 281 career games.
John Salmons (Guard-Forward) 7/22/2006
NEWS: Salmons backed out of a sign-and-trade deal that would have sent the swingman from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Star reported Saturday. Raptors officials, who thought they had agreed with Salmons on a $23 million, five-year deal as part of a sign-and-trade transaction for a 2007 second-round draft pick, were surprised when he pulled out.
NOTES: Salmons averaged a career-high 7.6 points and 2.7 rebounds for the 76ers last season.
John Salmons (Guard-Forward) 7/14/2006
NEWS: Salmons agreed to terms of a sign-and-trade deal with the Toronto Raptors on Thursday. The Sixers received a 2007 second-round draft choice and a $2 million trade exception in the deal, which the Philadelphia Daily News reported on its Web site to be worth $23 million over five years.
NOTES: The 26-year-old Salmons had his best season as a pro last year -- averaging 7.5 points and 2.7 rebounds -- but struggled at times to fit into an offense dominated by Allen Iverson and Chris Webber.
Quincy Douby (Guard) 7/4/2006
NEWS: The Kings signed Douby, their first-round pick, on Sunday. The 19th overall selection from Rutgers, Douby averaged 25.4 points and 4.3 rebounds a game last season. The guard will play with Sacramento's team in the Las Vegas summer league. Douby will make just over $1 million next season, according to the NBA's rookie salary scale.
NOTES:
Ron Artest (Small Forward) 4/24/2006
NEWS: Artest was suspended one game without pay for hitting Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs in the head with his forearm in the opener of the Western Conference first-round series Saturday. The Sacramento forward will miss Game 2 on Tuesday.
NOTES: The words "suspension" and "Artest" have gone hand-in-hand over the years, though this latest incident could be devastating to a Kings team coming off its worst playoff loss, a 122-88 defeat in which Artest went just 7-for-21 from the field for 16 points. Artest likely was retaliating after he was hit in the mouth by Ginobili's elbow on the game's opening possession. The cut inside his upper lip required three stitches.
Mike Bibby (Point Guard) 4/17/2006
NEWS: Bibby had 23 points and sank five 3-pointers in the Kings' 96-79 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday. The victory clinched Sacramento's eighth straight playoff berth.
NOTES: Bibby, the second overall pick in the 1998 draft by the Vancouver Grizzlies, is averaging a career-best 21.1 points to go along with 5.5 assists in 81 games this season. Over his last six games, the 27-year-old point guard is averaging 25.5 points and 5.8 assists.
Ron Artest (Small Forward) 4/8/2006
NEWS: Artest scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter of the Kings' 96-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. The win improved Sacramento to 22-13 since acquiring Artest on Jan. 25.
NOTES: Artest is averaging 17.5 points and 5.3 rebounds with the Kings, including 20.8 points in his last four games. The 26-year-old forward is a career 14.9-point scorer in 403 games with Chicago, Indiana and the Kings.
Mike Bibby (Point Guard) 3/25/2006
NEWS: Bibby is expected to play Saturday for the Kings despite not practicing Friday because of a hit he took on the shin Wednesday.
NOTES:
Francisco Garcia (Guard-Forward) 3/18/2006
NEWS: A sprained left ankle injury will prevent Garcia from playing for the Kings on Sunday. He'll likely return on Tuesday against Seattle.
NOTES: The rookie from Louisville has averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 52 games with Sacramento this season.
Vitaly Potapenko (Center) 2/23/2006
NEWS: Potapenko was acquired by the Sacramento Kings before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday in a four-team deal also involving Portland, Denver, and Seattle. The 10-year veteran will be joined by Sergei Monia on the Kings as Brian Skinner and Voshon Lenard joined Portland. Ruben Patterson, Reggie Evans, and Charles Smith go to Denver and Seattle acquired Earl Watson, Bryon Russell, and Denver's 2008 second round draft pick.
NOTES: Potapenko is averaging 3.1 points with 2.6 rebounds in 24 games for the SuperSonics this season. The center has been hampered with a strained lower back and has missed 19 consecutive games and 23 of the last 25.
Sergei Monia (Guard-Forward) 2/23/2006
NEWS: Monia was acquired by the Sacramento Kings before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday in a four-team deal also involving Portland, Denver, and Seattle. The rookie swingman will be joined by Vitaly Potapenko on the Kings as Brian Skinner and Voshon Lenard joined Portland. Ruben Patterson, Reggie Evans, and Charles Smith go to Denver and Seattle acquired Earl Watson, Bryon Russell, and Denver's 2008 second round draft pick.
NOTES: Monia has scored 3.3 points with 2.2 rebounds in 23 games this season for the Trail Blazers.
Kevin Martin (Shooting Guard) 2/10/2006
NEWS: Martin scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half of the Kings' 98-80 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday. The 23-year-old Sacramento shooting guard went 6-for-11 from the field and made all seven of his free-throw attempts.
NOTES: Martin continues to be a welcome surprise for the improving Kings, who are 4-1 in their last five games. In his first 20 games this season through Dec. 19, he averaged 5.4 points off the bench. Since then, he has started 22 of 24 contests and averaged 13.9 points, including 16 double-digit efforts. He twice scored a career-high 25 points last month in wins over Phoenix (Jan. 17) and Denver (Jan. 31). Overall, Martin is averaging 10.0 points and 3.6 rebounds this season.
Brad Miller (Center) 2/8/2006
NEWS: Miller played for the first time in four games and scored 22 points to lead the Kings to a 104-96 victory over Memphis on Tuesday night. Miller had been nursing a sore right thumb, but was able to knock down two straight 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
NOTES: The veteran center is averaging 15.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 45 games this season for Sacramento.
Mike Bibby (Point Guard) 2/6/2006
NEWS: Bibby had 23 points and six assists in the Kings' 96-78 win over the Utah Jazz on Sunday. The 27-year-old point guard went 7-for-19 from the field and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.
NOTES: Bibby is averaging a career-high 21.1 points per game this season, but has struggled with his shooting touch of late. He has shot under 50 percent in 10 of his last 11 games, garnering a 42.1 percent field-goal percentage over that span. However, he has topped the 40-point mark three times.
Bonzi Wells (Shooting Guard) 2/1/2006
NEWS: Wells returned to Sacramento's lineup Tuesday after missing 19 games with a torn muscle in his groin. The Kings' shooting guard had just seven points, but grabbed 14 rebounds in the 98-91 win over the Denver Nuggets.
NOTES: Acquired from Memphis last summer, Wells averaged 15.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game before getting injured Dec. 19 in a loss at Charlotte.
Mike Bibby (Point Guard) 1/30/2006
NEWS: Bibby scored a game-high 42 points in Sunday's 124-123 overtime loss to the Raptors. The Kings' point guard rebounded from just six points in the previous game to tally 35 or more points for the third time in four games.
NOTES: Bibby has started all 44 games for the Kings this season averaging 21.3 points, 5.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 38.3 minutes.
Ron Artest (Small Forward) 1/28/2006
NEWS: In his first game with Sacramento, Artest scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Kings' 84-74 loss to Boston. The former Indiana player made his first appearance since getting benched in mid-December. Artest scored seven of the team's first 15 points, but went just 1-for-5 from the field in the decisive fourth quarter.
NOTES: Artest has only played in 17 games this season, averaging 19.1 points between the two teams.
Mike Bibby (Point Guard) 1/26/2006
NEWS: Bibby scored eight of his 35 points in overtime and had 10 assists in Sacramento's 106-102 victory over the New York Knicks. The Kings point guard is averaging 39.5 points and seven assists in his last two games.
NOTES: In his eighth year in the league, Bibby is averaging 21.2 points and 5.6 assists in 42 starts this season.
Ron Artest (Small Forward) 1/25/2006
NEWS: Artest agreed to a deal Wednesday that would reportedly send him to the Sacramento Kings for Peja Stojakovic. The deal is pending the approval of Kings owners Gavin and Joe Maloof.
NOTES: Artest reportedly said Tuesday he didn't want to play for the Kings. The Indiana Pacers' forward has averaged 19.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 steals in 16 games this season. He hasn't played a game since a Dec. 6 game against the Dallas Mavericks. Artest finished that game with 15 points and five steals in 38 minutes of play.
