Toronto Raptors 2006 News & Notes
Jorge Garbajosa (Forward) 7/24/2006
NEWS: Garbajosa signed a multi-year contract with the Toronto Raptors on Monday. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 14.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 35 minutes for Unicaja in the Euroleague last season. The 28-year-old free agent played in Europe for 11 seasons and has played in two Olympics. He was the 2005 and 2006 Spanish Club Finals MVP.
NOTES:
Fred Jones (Shooting Guard) 7/23/2006
NEWS: Jones will sign with the Toronto Raptors, his agent said Sunday. Jones, a former slam-dunk champion, spent the first four years of his NBA career with the Indiana Pacers and played a key role while the team fought through injuries and suspensions the last two seasons.
NOTES: Jones should fit in well with the Raptors, who just added point guard T.J. Ford. Jones has spent most of his career as a backup, but will have a chance to compete for a starting spot in Toronto. He averaged 9.6 points a game as a backup last season, and 10.6 points and 3.1 rebounds two seasons ago.
Chris Bosh (Forward-Center) 7/14/2006
NEWS: Bosh signed a three-year contract extension with the Raptors on Friday beginning in 2007-08, with a player option for a fourth year. Bosh signed a deal similar to fellow class of 2003 stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who bypassed five-year deals for three years with an option for a fourth -- and the chance to become free agents sooner and potentially make more money.
NOTES: Last season, Bosh averaged 22.5 points and 9.2 rebounds and became an All-Star for the first time. The 6-foot-10 Raptors forward was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft behind James, Darko Milicic and Carmelo Anthony, and ahead of Wade.
Anthony Parker (Shooting Guard) 7/14/2006
NEWS: The Toronto Raptors signed Parker to a three-year, $12 million contract Thursday. Parker returns to the NBA after playing six seasons overseas, including the last two where he was Euroleague MVP for Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv. "I'm 31 years old, but I have the drive of a much younger player," Parker said. "I think I have something to prove."
NOTES: The 6-foot-6 Parker averaged 2.4 points in 55 career games for Philadelphia and Orlando after being drafted as the 21st overall pick by the New Jersey Nets in 1997.
Pape Sow (Forward-Center) 7/7/2006
NEWS: Sow had neck surgery Thursday night to repair a fractured vertebrae after falling and hitting another player during practice in Las Vegas. The Raptors' 6-foot-10 forward was taken by ambulance to a Las Vegas hospital on Tuesday after sustaining the injury and has been there since. The team said no timetable has been set for his return.
NOTES: Sow averaged 3.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 42 games for Toronto last season.
Andrea Bargnani (Forward) 7/2/2006
NEWS: Bargnani signed his rookie contract with the Raptors on Saturday, just three days after he became the first European player selected with the top overall pick in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-10, 225-pound forward will make $7.78 million in the first two years of the deal that runs through 2007-08.
NOTES: Bargnani averaged 11.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 21.7 minutes per game in his third season with Benetton of the Italian League. He shot 57.8 percent from the field, including 36.9 percent on 3-pointers.
T.J. Ford (Point Guard) 7/1/2006
NEWS: Ford was traded from Milwaukee to Toronto on Friday night for forward Charlie Villanueva. The speedy point guard fits exactly what the Raptors were looking for in a floor general, and should pair nicely with Toronto big men Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani.
NOTES: Ford averaged 12.2 points and 6.6 assists in 72 games last season for the Bucks after sitting out a year-and-a-half following spinal cord surgery. He's averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 assists in 127 career NBA games.
Rasho Nesterovic (Center) 6/21/2006
NEWS: San Antonio traded Nesterovic and cash to Toronto on Wednesday for forwards Matt Bonner and Eric Williams, and a second-round pick in 2009. The 7-foot, 255-pound Nesterovic has $23.5 million and three years left on his contract. "He's a smart basketball player who will help address our needs, particularly on the defensive end of the floor," Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo said.
NOTES: Nesterovic struggled this past season averaging just 4.5 points and 3.9 rebounds as he split time with Nazr Mohammed.
Chris Bosh (Forward-Center) 4/6/2006
NEWS: Bosh will miss the rest of the season with a sprained thumb, the Raptors learned Wednesday. The power forward suffered the injury in Toronto's 125-116 overtime loss to Milwaukee on March 26 and has missed the last five games.
NOTES: With the Raptors out of the playoff race, team doctors didn't want Bosh to do any more damage to the thumb. He averaged a team-best 22.5 points and 9.2 rebounds in 70 games this season.
T.J. Ford (Point Guard) 4/6/2006
NEWS: Ford had a career-high 34 points, 11 assists and six rebounds but it wasn't enough to help Milwaukee beat Orlando on Wednesday, losing 108-105. The speedy point guard missed all of last season, but has rebounded this year to average 11.9 points and 6.5 assists in 65 games.
NOTES:
Chris Bosh (Forward-Center) 3/28/2006
NEWS: Bosh is out indefinitely with a sprained left thumb and will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days to determine a timetable for his return. The Raptors' All-Star forward sustained the injury in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Bucks. Bosh had been in the Toronto starting lineup every game this season.
NOTES: Bosh leads the Raptors with 22.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. He is the only NBA player to average more than 22 points, shoot better than 50 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Chris Bosh (Forward-Center) 3/26/2006
NEWS: Bosh left early in Toronto's overtime loss to Milwaukee Sunday because of a sprained left thumb. The status of the Raptors' All-Star big man is day-to-day.
NOTES:
T.J. Ford (Point Guard) 3/26/2006
NEWS: Ford missed Milwaukee's game on Sunday against the Raptors. It was his second straight missed game because of a quadriceps injury. Ford also didn't play against the Lakers on Friday.
NOTES: Ford has averaged 11.7 points while starting 61 of his 62 games this season for the Bucks.
Antonio Davis (Forward-Center) 3/24/2006
NEWS: The Raptors waived forward-center Davis on Thursday.
NOTES: Davis has averaged 4.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 44 games with the Raptors and Knicks this season.
Antonio Davis (Forward-Center) 3/20/2006
NEWS: Davis could miss the rest of the season for the Toronto Raptors because of a back injury.
NOTES: Davis has averaged 4.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 44 games with the Raptors and Knicks this season.
Andre Barrett (Point Guard) 3/15/2006
NEWS: Barrett signed a 10-day contract Wednesday with the Toronto Raptors. The point guard was released by the Phoenix Suns Tuesday after appearing in two games, scoring a combined nine points and tallying two assists.
NOTES: Barrett averaged 17.0 points and 6.6 assists for the Florida Flame in the NBDL this season. He also appeared in eight preseason NBA games for the Milwaukee Bucks before being waived.
Fred Jones (Shooting Guard) 3/10/2006
NEWS: Jones has a torn ligament in his left thumb and will reportedly miss at least the remainder of the Indiana Pacers' three-game road trip. The Pacers were scheduled to play the New Orleans Hornets Friday night and the Toronto Raptors Sunday before returning home for Monday's game against the Orlando Magic.
NOTES: Jones is averaging 10.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists this season. He missed Wednesday's 103-99 loss to the Houston Rockets with the injury and went scoreless in 22 minutes of play Tuesday against the New York Knicks.
Antonio Davis (Forward-Center) 3/3/2006
NEWS: Davis reportedly consulted with a back specialist in New York on Thursday. He's currently on the inactive list, but the Toronto Raptors' forward is expected to rejoin the team in New Jersey on Saturday regardless of whether or not he plays.
NOTES: Davis went on the inactive list on Wednesday with back spasms. He's averaging 4.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists this season.
Chris Bosh (Forward-Center) 2/26/2006
NEWS: Bosh scored 29 points with 13 rebounds for the Raptors in their 115-113 overtime loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. The game was his third straight with more than 25 points and he has 29 rebounds in that span.
NOTES: Bosh leads the Raptors with 22.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game through 55 games this season.
T.J. Ford (Point Guard) 2/17/2006
NEWS: Ford, still battling lingering effects from a mid-back injury he sustained in a Feb. 14 game against the Seattle SuperSonics, reportedly said he would skip the NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge game if his back wasn't better by Friday night.
NOTES: Ford had six points and five assists in his last game Feb. 15 against the Indiana Pacers. He had been listed as questionable for the game.
