New Orleans/OklaCity Hornets 2006 News & Notes
Jannero Pargo (Point Guard) 8/9/2006
NEWS: The New Orleans Hornets signed Pargo to a two-year contract on Wednesday.
NOTES: The former Chicago Bull averaged 4.8 points and shot 38 percent from 3-point range in 57 games off the bench last season. The team is expecting him to pick up more minutes than he did in Chicago. "He's not an insurance policy," Hornets general manager Jeff Bower said.
Bobby Jackson (Point Guard) 7/27/2006
NEWS: Jackson, a free agent, signed with the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday. The 33-year-old guard averaged 11.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 71 games for Memphis last season, his first with the team. "I didn't want to go to a team that wasn't going to be in the playoffs," Jackson said. "I feel real strongly that with the guys that we have ... we can make a strong run for the playoffs."
NOTES: Jackson has also played for Denver, Minnesota and Sacramento during his nine NBA seasons, averaging 10.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
Rasual Butler (Small Forward) 7/27/2006
NEWS: Butler re-signed with the New Oreleans Hornets on Wednesday after averaging 8.7 points as a reserve last season.
NOTES: Butler has averaged 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 261 career games.
Hilton Armstrong (Forward-Center) 7/6/2006
NEWS: Armstrong signed with the Hornets on Wednesday, and will make $3.05 million over the next two years, according to the NBA's rookie scale. The 12th overall pick out of Connecticut, the 6-foot-11 Armstrong averaged 9.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks in his senior season and was named Big East defensive player of the year. He can play both power forward and center.
NOTES:
Cedric Simmons (Forward-Center) 7/6/2006
NEWS: Simmons signed with the Hornets on Wednesday and will earn $2.62 million over the next two years, according to the NBA's rookie scale. The 15th overall pick out of North Carolina State, the 6-foot-9 Simmons entered the draft after his sophomore year, following a season in which he averaged 11.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. He can play both forward spots and fill in as a center.
NOTES:
Tyson Chandler (Center) 7/6/2006
NEWS: The Bulls agreed to trade Chandler to New Orleans on Wednesday for P.J. Brown and J.R Smith. The deal can't be completed until the NBA's moratorium ends next week. The 7-foot Chandler was deemed expendable after Chicago signed Ben Wallace to a four-year contract earlier in the week. Drafted out of high school in 2001, Chandler averaged 5.3 points and 9.0 rebounds last season, his first after signing a six-year, $60 million contract.
NOTES:
Bobby Jackson (Point Guard) 7/3/2006
NEWS: According to Jackson's agent, Andy Miller, the veteran point guard agreed to a multiyear deal with the Hornets on Sunday. NBA teams were allowed to begin negotiating with free agents on Saturday but cannot officially sign players until July 12. Miller wouldn't disclose the terms of the deal and Hornets general manager Jeff Bower said the team planned to sign Jackson after the moratorium ends but declined further comment.
NOTES: Jackson averaged 11.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 71 games last season, his first with Memphis. The 33-year-old guard has also played for Denver, Minnesota and Sacramento during his nine NBA seasons, averaging 10.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists. New Orleans also reached an agreement with three-time All-Star Peja Stojakovic on Saturday, who played alongside Jackson for five seasons with the Kings.
Peja Stojakovic (Small Forward) 7/2/2006
NEWS: The New Orleans Hornets agreed to terms with Stojakovic on a five-year deal worth about $64 million Saturday, said his agent, David Bauman. Bauman said Stojakovic will sign as soon as the NBA's moratorium ends next week. NBA teams were allowed to begin negotiating with free agents Saturday but cannot officially sign players until July 12.
NOTES: After playing his first seven-plus seasons with Sacramento, the Kings dealt Stojakovic to Indiana in a midseason trade for Ron Artest. He averaged 19.5 points and shot 46.1 percent from the field in 40 games with the Pacers but then missed four of Indiana's six playoff games against the New Jersey Nets with a right knee injury. The Pacers lost each game he didn't play.
Peja Stojakovic (Small Forward) 6/27/2006
NEWS: Stojakovic opted out of the final year of his contract Tuesday but wants to return to Indiana. The 29-year-old forward took advantage of the early termination clause in his six-year deal and became a free agent in hopes of getting a raise and long-term contract, his agent David Bauman said. His current deal would have paid him more than $8.1 million next season.
NOTES: Stojakovic averaged 19.5 points and shot 46.1 percent from the field in 40 games with the Pacers after a midseason trade for Ron Artest. He missed four of the six playoff games against the New Jersey Nets with a right knee injury, but Bauman said the knee has healed.
Chris Paul (Point Guard) 5/11/2006
NEWS: Paul was a near-unanimous pick for Rookie of the Year honors Wednesday. The point guard received all but one of the 125 first-place votes from a panel of media members. Utah guard Deron Williams -- who was taken with the No. 3 pick in last year's draft, one spot ahead of Paul -- received the only other first-place vote.
NOTES: Paul led all rookies in points (16.1), assists (7.8), steals (2.2), double-doubles (21), minutes played (36.0) and triple-doubles (2).
Chris Paul (Point Guard) 5/4/2006
NEWS: Paul of New Orleans was an unanimous selection to the NBA all-rookie team on Thursday.
NOTES: Paul led all rookies in points, assists, steals and double-doubles. Paul finished his first season averaging 16.1 points, 7.8 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals, while also recording 21 double-doubles.
Peja Stojakovic (Small Forward) 4/30/2006
NEWS: Stojakovic sat out Indiana's 97-88 loss to the New Jersey in Game 4 on Saturday with a recurrence of the right knee injury that has bothered him all season. The Pacers' shooting guard has played in Games 1 and 3 in the series but has been forced to sit out Games 2 and 4. Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said he didn't know if Stojakovic would be available for Game 5.
NOTES: Indiana has won both games he has been in the lineup and lost the two he has missed, so clearly, the Pacers need his outside shooting to stretch the Nets' defense.
Tyson Chandler (Center) 4/30/2006
NEWS: Chandler had to be helped off the floor in the closing seconds of Chicago's 93-87 win over Miami in Game 4 on Sunday. He suffered a mild to moderate sprain of his right ankle and his availability for Game 5 has yet to be determined. The center will hve X-rays on Monday and be re-evaluated. He left the Bulls' locker room riding on a cart.
NOTES: He had only one point and three rebounds in 21 minutes on Sunday, but Chandler is a big part of the rotation and a key to defending Heat center Shaquille O'Neal.
Peja Stojakovic (Small Forward) 4/26/2006
NEWS: Stojakovic missed the Pacers' 90-75 loss to the Nets on Tuesday because of pain and fluid on his right knee, which has bothered him all season. An MRI exam on the knee on Monday showed no structural damage, although the fluid limited his mobility.
NOTES: Stojakovic, who had 12 points and five rebounds in nearly 26 minutes in Sunday's 90-88 win, is expected to be back in Indiana's lineup on Thursday. Stojakovic averaged 19.5 points in 40 games with the Pacers, and Tuesday was the first game he missed since being traded to Indiana from Sacramento on Jan. 25.
Chris Paul (Point Guard) 4/6/2006
NEWS: Paul had his second career triple-double _ and his second in a week _ in New Orleans' 114-109 win over Golden State on Wednesday. The point guard, the favorite for rookie of the year, had 17 points, a career-high 16 assists and 11 rebounds to help the Hornets stay in playoff contention.
NOTES: Paul is averaging 16.4 points, 8.0 assists and 5.3 rebounds in his first year out of Wake Forest and has won all five Western Conference rookie of the month awards.
Chris Paul (Point Guard) 4/3/2006
NEWS: Chris Paul had 24 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds in Sunday's 120-113 double-overtime win over the Raptors for his first career triple-double. The Hornets' rookie had seven points in the second overtime, including a key 3-pointer.
NOTES: Paul is averaging 16.3 points, 7.9 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals in 68 games this season.
Jackson Vroman (Forward-Center) 3/31/2006
NEWS: Vroman was waived by the Hornets on Friday, following a season-ending wrist injury suffered in February. The forward-center averaged 1.8 points and 2.1 rebounds for New Orleans this season. He was part of the deal that sent Jim Jackson to Phoenix in January 2005.
NOTES:
Marcus Fizer (Forward) 3/31/2006
NEWS: The Hornets signed Fizer to a 10-day contract on Friday, giving New Orleans another player for its injury-ravaged frontcourt. The 6-foot-8 forward was honored as MVP of the NBA's developmental league after averaging 22.7 points and 7.8 rebounds. Fizer signed a 10-day contract with Seattle earlier this season, but did not appear in any games.
NOTES: To make room for Fizer, the fourth overall pick in the 2000 draft, New Orleans waived Jackson Vroman. Fizer has appeared in 232 games with Chicago and Milwaukee.
David West (Power Forward) 3/28/2006
NEWS: West missed Monday's 104-80 loss to the Jazz with a sprained left ankle. The status of the Hornets' power forward is uncertain for Wednesday's matchup with the Warriors.
NOTES: West is averaging 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in 66 games this season.
Desmond Mason (Guard-Forward) 3/25/2006
NEWS: Mason might return from a sprained left MCL for the Hornets' home game against Memphis on Friday. He was fitted for a second knee brace on Friday in Chicago.
